Getting started with Split-Flap TV

Split-Flap TV turns a TV you already own into a vintage split-flap (Solari) board you control from your phone. Here's the whole journey, from sign up to a board flipping on your screen, in about five minutes.

There are two sides to it. The app on your TV device shows the board, and the web control panel you open on your phone, tablet or laptop is where you write and manage your boards. Once the screen is paired, everything you change in the control panel appears on it in seconds.

You don't need special hardware or an installer. If your TV can run apps, or you can plug an inexpensive streaming device into it, you can run Split-Flap TV. One subscription covers one screen, so add a subscription for each extra TV you want to run.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Start your free trial

Create your account and start the free 7 day trial. No card is required. This gives you a login for the control panel.

  2. 02

Install the app on your TV

Install Split-Flap TV on your Apple TV, Android TV or Google TV Streamer. Most smart TVs can run it directly. The app is a free download, and there are per device guides in the Devices section.

  3. 03

    Scan the code

Open the app. The TV shows a QR code. Scan it with your phone and the screen is paired. There's nothing to type, and no email address or password to enter with a remote control.

  4. 04

    Create your first board

In the control panel, choose New board, type your message or menu, pick a layout, and assign it to your screen.

  5. 05

    Save and watch it flip

Hit save and the board flips into place on your TV within a few seconds. Change it any time from your phone.

§ Good to know
  • ·The screen comes back on its own. Switch on start after reboot and the app restarts when the power does, returning to the board it was showing. Nobody has to be in the building after a power cut.
  • ·You can check any screen from anywhere. Ask a screen for a picture of exactly what it's showing right now, which is useful when it's on another floor and necessary when it's in another building.
  • ·Every screen reports in. The dashboard lists each one with the time it last checked in, so a screen that has dropped off shows as offline instead of looking fine until somebody mentions it.
  • ·The control panel works from any browser, so your staff can update the board from their own phones without touching the TV.
  • ·Boards can loop or be scheduled. Create as many as you like, cycle through them, or set them to change by time of day.

Troubleshooting

My board isn't showing on the TV

Check that the app is open on the screen, that the TV has an internet connection, and that the screen is paired to your account. If the display looks stuck, reopen the app. If the screen shows as offline in your dashboard, it has stopped checking in, and restarting the app usually clears it.

The QR code won't scan

Use your phone's normal camera app rather than a separate QR reader. If the code doesn't appear at all, the app may not have reached the internet yet, so check the device's network connection and reopen the app.

How many screens does one subscription cover?

One subscription runs one television or tablet. To run a second screen, add another subscription. Rolling out five or more screens? Get in touch about volume and onboarding.
